Air India Flight 171 Tragedy: One Year On, Families Continue to Grapple With Irreversible Loss

One year after the Air India Flight 171 crash near Ahmedabad, families continue to mourn the loss of 260 passengers, including Parvez Vahora, his daughter Zuveriya, and many others. The tragedy left only one survivor, while investigations continue and interim compensation has been provided to most affected families, highlighting an enduring national aviation tragedy.

A year after the catastrophic crash of Air India Flight 171 shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on its London-bound journey, the lives of hundreds of families remain permanently fractured by one of India’s most devastating aviation disasters in recent years.

The aircraft went down moments after departure, killing 260 people on board and leaving behind a trail of grief, unanswered questions, and enduring trauma. Among the deceased were Parvez Vahora and his four-year-old daughter, Zuveriya, who had travelled to India with their family and were returning to London at the time of the accident.

Their deaths left Mobbashera Vahora, Parvez Vahora’s wife and Zuveriya’s mother, facing an unimaginable personal catastrophe. Based in London at the time, she was unable to remain alone in the United Kingdom following the tragedy and subsequently returned to her native place in Tarapur, Maharashtra. Pregnant during the incident, she endured the compounded emotional and physical toll of losing her husband and daughter.

After returning to India, Mobbashera Vahora gave birth to a baby boy, a moment described by relatives as both a source of solace and a painful reminder of the family he will never know. Family members noted that she had been advised to relocate following the tragedy, as she struggled to cope with the loss.

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also among those who lost their lives in the crash.

The tragedy produced a single survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national, who managed to walk away from the wreckage with injuries. His survival came despite the death of 241 others on board, including his own brother.

One year after the disaster, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau continues its investigation into the cause of the crash. Air India has stated that interim compensation has been disbursed to 96 percent of the families who lost relatives in the incident.

As the inquiry continues, the scale of human loss remains stark. The Air India Flight 171 crash stands as a lasting reminder of how a single moment in the sky reshaped hundreds of lives on the ground, leaving behind grief that time has yet to resolve.
